In Motion: Riese & Müller publishes its third Responsibility Report

Riese & Müller, the premium manufacturer of E-Bikes and Cargo-Bikes, has published its third Responsibility Report, entitled “In Motion”. On its way to becoming the most sustainable company in the E-Bike industry, Riese & Müller documents its development and progress in the 2021/2022 financial year in terms of waste management, CO2 emissions and its transparent supply chain. The company is also focussing particularly on recycled aluminium and the concept of circular economy as a benchmark for sustainable design. The Responsibility Report also focuses on three cycling-friendly cities that have taken the bold step towards change and so can serve as a blueprint for sustainable mobility.
“This report makes it clear where we stand today. It also shows that sustainability demands constant movement and therefore resilience. We are not dealing here with a linear process, but need to continuously learn and adapt processes. We also see all the more clearly how important the will to change things is”, explains Dr Sandra Wolf, Managing Partner of Riese & Müller.

Our positive carbon footprint in the past financial year is a key development: the company has been able to reduce its net CO2 emissions by almost 10% compared to the previous year – despite an increase in production by around 18,000 bikes. The manufacturer’s main focus is on site logistics in order to further reduce its CO2 emissions. By 2026, Riese & Müller will therefore systematically switch its fleet to electric vehicles that can be charged with electricity we generate ourselves.
In terms of waste management, we have therefore been working to reduce waste and further improve our recycling rate – which is already over 90%. Recycling also plays a key role with the risk material aluminium: Riese & Müller has launched a pilot project with the Portuguese frame manufacturer Triangle’s and the Norwegian supplier Hydro with the aim of using only recycled aluminium by 2025.
“We are making good progress wherever we have partners and are committed to a common vision”, explains Dr Sandra Wolf. We can see what this vision looks like in reality in San Francisco, Copenhagen and Paris, among other cities. The three cities are committed to a mobility-friendly and people-centric change, which the company actively supports with its products and intense collaborative work. Riese & Müller therefore examined the changes under way on the ground last year and rounds off its Responsibility Report with three detailed profiles of the cities and interviews with local dealers.
